Practical Help (getting organized)

One of the hardest things for me is never seeming to get on top of things. There is always something needs doing and I never get to concentrate on one task for more than 5 minutes, make that 2 minutes, before I’m distracted. I worry about what I spend, I worry about our mortgage, what will happen to the kids if I wasn’t around, what would happen to all of us if dad wasn’t here, what I’d do if my parents get sick (they are in the UK, so the logistics get complicated). And these are just some of the things in the back of my head.

What I’ve found is the best way to stop some of these worries, is to prioritise them and where possible, address them.

The main problem with doing this is actually finding the time to sit down and do it.

There are plenty of tools out there that can help make the process easier and here’s a few tips for getting started.

Enlist the help of your partner, or a friend in the same situation, or your mum - basically someone who understands and wants to help. They may need to do the same thing so you can work together, or they may just be there as a sounding board. Someone to check in and see how you're going.

Make a list of what you need to do and set aside just an hour or two each week, perhaps an evening or weekend, when your partner can take the kids for a couple of hours.

Prioritise and address one thing at a time.

Some of the practical areas you might need to address are:

With most of these items, once you have done the work to set things up, they don't need to be revisited very often. You will know you have some control in your life, you can be confident you are protected as best you can going forward and you can be sure you know your entitlements.
